Nobody sews straight through a Saturday. There is always a pause while the bobbin winds, a stretch after the last seam in a row, and one long, lovely break when the whole block finally lines up. Sips Between Stitches keeps those pauses company with wine sippers and quilter's flasks, each one carrying a member of our wild-haired Quilt Hair Don't Care flock. Every bird comes in both, so the only hard choice is which break you are planning for.
The quick sip while the iron heats
Some breaks last about as long as it takes the steam to build. Ziggy Bobbin spreads his green and blue wings wide beside a little sewing machine, clearly ready to get right back to it. Snipsy Wren perches under an arch of lettering with her rotary cutter and scissors laid out on the cutting mat, rainbow curls piled high. Frizzle Mae, round and sky blue with a spiky green crest, sits beside a scatter of scraps and looks like she has just remembered the pressing she skipped.
The breather after the last seam in the row
This is the break with a little shouting in it. Chaos Finch throws back her head in a burst of orange and rainbow feathers, perched on a heap of quilts. Noodle Beakman stands tall on skinny legs with a shock of red hair and a stack of fabric, declaring Quilt Hair, I Don't Care. Ruckus Jay hugs a bright star block to his chest while his rainbow crest goes in every direction, and the words curving beneath him add a firm nope.
The long break, feet up
Then there is the break that runs a bit long, and nobody minds. Velma Nightwing, plump and purple under a cloud of dark curls, keeps a glass of red right next to her machine. Lady Plumeadora, the peacock, fans her tail beside a generous pile of fabric. Curlene Spoolworth, all yellow and red with a patchwork crest, rests on a branch where spools of thread dangle like ornaments. Pip Patchlet hangs a pink and green quilt over her branch to air, Puffin Bea sits under a swirl of pale blue curls beside a tidy fabric stack, and Peaches Plume, pink from beak to tail, holds up a quilt block she is clearly very proud of.
Pour one for the friend who earned it
Every sewing group has a quilter who deserves a proper break and rarely takes one. A wine sipper suits the friend who hosts sew night on her dining table, and a flask suits the one who packs her retreat tote like she is heading into the wilderness. Match her to the bird with her hair, her mood or her mess, and hand it over. The break schedule is posted, after all, and every quilter knows it ends only when the bobbin is full, or when someone says the words "just one more row."
