You know the night. The house is quiet, the pillow is perfect, and your brain has decided now is the ideal time to rearrange every block in the quilt on your design wall. Sheep never worked for us quilters anyway. We count squares. Sewn Into Dreamland is what floats past when you close your eyes and let the sewing room drift in: sunrises, soft waves, a machine humming somewhere far away and a few very sleepy words of wisdom.
The first squares drift by
It always starts somewhere dreamy. Quilting on a Cloud opens like a painting, with a vintage machine under a golden sun and a long rainbow ribbon of fabric flowing out across swirls of sky. Starlit Wonder sets a black machine silhouette against a glowing sunset circle that melts into the water below, and a bright blue machine rides waves of stitched blue inside a perfect round frame, as calm as the tide. By now the eyelids are getting heavy. Sound familiar?
Then the squares start talking
Just as you nod off, the words arrive. Blessed Are the Quilters, For They Shall Be Called Piece Makers glows in warm peach lettering with a pincushion tucked in. Life's a Stitch spells itself out in violet beneath a spray of pins and a pair of scissors. My Therapy fills a machine silhouette with rainbow swirls or a sunset orange, I Love Fabric wears its heart in bright red, and Today Is a Groovy Day to Quilt bounces along in soft retro letters. One design admits that while it may look like it is listening to you, its head is thinking about quilting, which is exactly the problem at two in the morning.
Somewhere around three
Every quilter's dream takes a spooky little turn eventually. Haunted Stitches brings in a wide-eyed owl at the machine under a full yellow moon, with a friendly ghost peeking over the edge of the table. By then the dream has settled into its rhythm, and Eat Sleep Quilt Repeat circles a crossed needle and scissors around a spool and a tiny bed, while I'd Rather Be Quilting sits beneath an old treadle-style machine, saying what every tired quilter is thinking.
Tuck her in with the right one
Maybe it is the friend who texts you pictures of her half-finished top at midnight and apologizes in the morning, or the one who swears her best ideas come just before she drifts off. One of these dreams belongs to her, the one that matches the way her mind wanders when the lamp goes out. Somewhere past square four hundred, she will finally fall asleep. And in the morning she will wake up knowing exactly which border that quilt needs.
