First, a definition, for the people in the back who married into a quilting family and are still learning the language. Resting Stitch Face is the expression a quilter makes during a quarter-inch seam. It is not anger. It is not worry. It is total concentration wearing a face that makes strangers ask if everything is okay. Everything is more than okay. Everything is being measured.
It is also not new. Women have been concentrating that hard for all of recorded history, and the world has been misreading their faces the entire time. So we did what had to be done: we went through history, found the ten greatest Resting Stitch Faces ever worn, and ranked them. The methodology was rigorous. The arguing was extensive. The results are final, until the comments.
10. The American Gothic Seamstress.
The original "we are not amused and we are not stopping" face. Anyone who has posed for a family photo while mentally counting the blocks left in a border knows this exact expression. Farmhouse optional. Pitchfork traded for a seam gauge.
9. Bowow.
Yes, a dog made the list. Dogs sit at the foot of the sewing chair through every crisis, wearing the long-suffering face of a creature who knows dinner is late because of a binding. That is Resting Stitch Face by proximity, and it counts.
8. Bias Billie.
Every guild has one: the member who cuts on the bias on purpose, for fun, unafraid of stretch. The face is pure outlaw calm. You do not question Bias Billie. You quietly watch and learn.
7. Jane Good-stitch.
Decades of patient observation in the field, notebook in hand, waiting for the subject to do something remarkable. Quilters know this one as the face you make watching a long seam feed through, ready to intervene, choosing not to. Science calls it discipline. We call it Tuesday.
6. Florence Needle-Gale.
Patron saint of the midnight stitcher. Veiled, lamplit, bent over her work while the sensible world sleeps ~ doing her rounds, checking on every seam, losing none. Every quilter who has finished a binding by lamplight because the birthday was tomorrow is in this portrait somewhere.
5. El-Seam Nor Roosevelt.
Sleeves rolled, hair pinned, one block held mid-placement before the great grid of the design wall. The design wall is where a quilt becomes policy ~ what stays, what moves, what gets voted off entirely ~ and hers is the face of a woman who has never lost that vote. No one can make you feel inferior about your points without your consent.
4. Georgia O-Sew.
In profile, holding a palette that on second look is loaded with fabric swatches instead of paint, one great bloom opening out of the middle of it. She understood that if you make the small thing large enough, people finally see it. One block is a block. A hundred and twenty of them is a landscape. The face: serene certainty that the scale is correct and everyone else will catch up.
3. Cleo Patch Ra.
Reclining. Full headdress, gold borders, cushions arranged by staff, and in her hands ~ needlework, growing longer while the empire runs itself. Ruled the known world, still kept a handwork project going. It is the nine p.m. couch posture of every quilter alive, executed with better furniture, and the face says the pyramid is simply a half-square triangle with ambition.

2. Fray-da Kahio.
At her vintage machine, flowers in her hair, a patchwork quilt spilling across her lap in every color at once, absolutely serene in the middle of it. A woman who turned what unraveled her into art ~ the most quilter sentence ever written. Every frayed edge in your scrap bin is a masterpiece that hasn't been arranged yet. She knew it first, and the face knows that you know she knew.

1. Amelia SewHearts.
Goggles pushed up, stitching her way across an actual map ~ continents in blue, flight path dotted out in thread, stars behind her. The number one seed because hers is the Resting Stitch Face pointed at the horizon: some quilters follow the pattern, and some chart the course as they sew it and log the miles in stitches. Both finish quilts. Only one needed goggles, and that is why she's champion.
