Stitch or Treat ~ a Field Guide to the Haunted Sewing Room

Every October, sewing rooms across the country transform. The light gets lower. The thread gets darker. Somewhere around nine at night, a quilter whispers "just one more stitch" ~ and everyone in the house knows that phrase is a haunting, not a promise.

We built a whole collection for this season, Haunted Threads, and writing this field guide, we noticed something. Halloween didn't need a costume department. It needed a quilt guild. And the guild, it turns out, is mostly run by cats.

Exhibit one: the Wicked Stitcher. A black cat with lantern-green eyes, sitting bolt upright beside a broom, loops of green thread swirling through the air around her like she's mid-incantation. Every quilter lives with a familiar like this or knows someone who does ~ the cat who supervises from the end of the ironing board, who has never once helped, whose presence is somehow still required for the work to proceed. Is the thread swirling because of the cat? We cannot prove otherwise. The broom, we assume, is for the trimmings she will not be sweeping.

Exhibit two, and this one is a warning: the Mummified Strip Quilter. Also a cat (they really do run the season), this one wrapped nose to tail in quilt strips, oranges and blacks and little Halloween prints, one ear bowed, standing on a pile of yet more strips with bats overhead and a spider descending to inspect. This is what happens when you walk past the strip basket one time too many. It reaches for you. There is no rescue for this condition. There is only admiration, and possibly scissors, and the strong suspicion that the cat did it to herself on purpose because the strips were soft.

Not everything haunting the sewing room is feline. Out of the dark comes the one question that matters at eleven p.m., and it's asked from an unexpected perch: an owl, sitting right on top of a vintage black sewing machine, full moon rising behind, thread drifting in loops around the both of them, a half-finished quilt still under the needle. Whooo's stitching? You are. You know you are. The lamp is on, the machine is warm, and the owl has assumed the supervisory position, because apparently every creature in this collection believes you need supervision. On the raglan, the moon glows over the whole scene, and we recommend it for guild retreat evenings when the honest answer to the owl is "all of us, until someone makes us stop."

And then there is the Zombie Quilter, the only monster in the guide who is actually one of us. Green to the elbows, sun hat still on from whenever she sat down, apron strings holding, mid-wail at her vintage machine ("Noooo!") while a small owl watches from the machine head with zero sympathy. We have all been the Zombie Quilter. It is two a.m., the moon is up, the bats are out, something has gone wrong in the bobbin case at the exact worst seam, and you have been sewing so long you have biologically changed. Scientists would call it a sleep disorder. We call it October through December.

Which brings us to the final exhibit, the season's patron saint: a skeleton, sitting cross-legged on the floor, calmly working a needle through a checkerboard quilt block, a glass of red wine within arm's reach. The shirt says "Just One More Stitch," and the skeleton is the punchline: this is the quilter who said it and meant it, every night, for a very long time, and honestly? Still stitching. Still has the wine. Things could be worse. It is the most peaceful image in the whole collection and it is on a tee the exact orange of the season.

Here is the honest truth under all the costumes, though. Fall is the quilter's real new year. The garden lets go of you. The evenings hand themselves over. The projects that idled all summer wake up hungry sometime around the first cold night, and the sewing room becomes the warmest room in the house again, in every sense. The cats and the owls and the skeleton are a joke we're all in on ~ but the season itself is the sincerest one we get.

So light the pumpkin-scented candle. Put on something from Haunted Threads. Answer the owl honestly. And when the clock strikes twelve and you hear yourself say "just one more stitch" ~ well. The skeleton said it too, and look how content she turned out.

Sweet dreams. Sew scary.
