Quilt Hair, Don't Care ~ Meet the Flock That Lives Here

Every quilter knows the hair. You sit down for twenty minutes of piecing, you stand up three hours later, and the mirror shows you a person who has clearly been through something. Thread on your shoulder. A pin you forgot about. Hair that has given up on the plan entirely.

We made a whole flock out of that feeling.

They're called the Quilt Hair, Don't Care crew, and they live all over this shop. Curlene Spoolworth is the one who started it ~ a tall tropical bird with a crest that erupts in every color thread comes in, curling off her head exactly the way it curls off the spool. She perches on her branch like she owns it, and she does, and here is our favorite detail, the one you only catch when you look closely: her thread spools dangle from that branch on little strings, like ornaments. She is not storing them. She is displaying them. There's a difference, and every quilter with a wall of thread racks arranged by color knows precisely what it is.

She didn't stay alone for long. Snipsy Wren turned up next, a small round bird with an enormous swirling bouffant of curls and paisley, the kind of hairdo that happens when you lean over a cutting mat for one entire afternoon. And we know it was the cutting mat, because she's still standing next to it. Mat, rotary cutter, tiny bird, towering hair. The evidence tells the story. Snipsy rides on a distressed baseball cap, which we find funny in a way we can't fully explain ~ the bird with the biggest hair in the flock, on the hat you wear when you've stopped negotiating with your own.

Then there's Puffin Bea, and Puffin Bea is all of us on deadline. A little blue bird with eyes as wide as bobbins and a head that is no longer hair at all. It's one glorious tangled ball of every thread she has ever owned, all at once. And beside her, and this is the part that gets us every time, sits a small, immaculate stack of finished quilts. Folded. Squared. Perfect. Total chaos above the neck, flawless work below it. If that is not the truest portrait of a quilter ever drawn, we'd like to see the truer one. Bea lives on a wine sipper, which feels correct. She has earned it. Look at that stack.

The rest of the flock is all here too, and the roll call alone tells you who you're dealing with: Lady Plumeadora. Ziggy Bobbin. Chaos Finch. Ruckus Jay. Velma Nightwing. Pip Patchlet. Peaches Plume. Frizzle Mae. Eleven birds, eleven heads of hair with opinions of their own, and there is always one whose name makes you point at the screen and say "that one is me on a Saturday." We are not here to argue with you about which one it is. The flock has spread the way flocks do ~ across relaxed and premium tees for the everyday, onto distressed caps for the days the hair wins, and onto quilter's flasks and wine sippers, because hydration is part of the craft and we don't ask what's in the flask.

And here's the thing we love most about the whole crew: nobody wears these birds because they're embarrassed. Quilt hair is a receipt. It says you finished the border. It says the flying geese finally flew. It says you got to do the thing you love long enough for it to show (and honestly, may we all be so lucky every single weekend).

Come meet the birds. Find the one with your hair. She's been waiting on her branch.
