Porch Light On, Rotary Cutter Ready: A Quilter's Halloween Route

Some quilters hand out candy on Halloween. The rest of us are in the sewing room with the porch light on, answering the door between seams. Rotary Cutter Chic is our spooky season in the sewing room, where ghosts wind thread, skeletons piece blocks and the rotary cutter is always somewhere in the picture, sharp as ever and dressed for the occasion. Grab a pillowcase. Here is the route.

First stop: the house at the end of the street

The Stash Has Tenants is the house every quilter secretly lives in, built entirely from folded fabric, stacked bolts and spools, with a rotary cutter for a weathervane and friendly ghosts drifting out of the windows. Across the street, Better Than Candy sets out a grinning jack-o-lantern bucket stuffed with rolled fabric, a rotary cutter tucked in among the bundles and candy corn scattered at its base. We know which treat we would take.

Second stop: the costume contest

We Committed brings two retro ladies who went all in on their costumes, one dressed as a spool of pink thread and the other as a round turquoise bobbin, shopping bags on their arms and absolutely no regrets. Dead Serious About Quilting seats three skeletons in their best vintage dresses around a sewing table, piecing a quilt with complete concentration. Just The Essentials lines up a parade of little ghosts in every color, each one carrying a notion, marching toward a tiny machine.

Last stop: home, where the cat is working

Tricks, Treats, Thread lays out the whole season like a quilter's pincushion tray: a pumpkin, a ghost wound in orange thread, sharp scissors, a witch's hat, an embroidery hoop spun into a spider web and a black cat curled up on a folded fat quarter. And HELPING shows a black cat stretched across the cutting mat, rotary cutter pinned beneath him, with a hand reaching in to reclaim the workspace. He has a name tag. It says Helping. He means it. The Quilteontologist lines ride along too, for anyone who makes bold cuts and braces for impact.

For the quilter who dresses up the sewing room

These are for the friend who hangs ghost bunting over her design wall every October, the retreat group that plans matching costumes, and anyone who would happily trade a bag of candy for a bag of fat quarters. Picture her answering the door in one with a half-sewn block still in her hand. The trick-or-treaters will get their chocolate, of course. The rotary cutter stays with her, because this is the one night a year that everything sharp counts as costume.
