The best moment of any quilt retreat happens before a single machine is plugged in. Somebody tapes the cabin list to the lodge door, everyone crowds around with their rolling totes, and you find out who you will be sharing a bunk, an outlet strip and a bag of pretzels with for the next three days. Quilt Retreat Icons is that list, filled with the characters who make a retreat legendary. Here is who landed where.
Cabin one: the night owls
This cabin never turns the lights off. Quilters After Dark gathers a witch, a skeleton, a mummy and one very calm quilter around a grinning jack-o'-lantern and a heap of patchwork, with a black cat curled up in the fabric. Coven Meeting seats a circle of witches around a quilt spread across the table, every hat pointed at the corners. Dead Serious About Quilting puts a pair of skeletons to work at the sewing table beside a woman in a sunny yellow skirt, and Just The Essentials lines up a parade of little ghosts, each one clutching a spool, a scrap or a pincushion, with a sewing machine bringing up the rear.
Cabin two: the portrait gallery
These roommates brought their Resting Stitch Face and their sense of history. Georgia O-Sew holds a palette of fabric squares instead of paint. American Gothic Seamstress keeps the famous farmer and his pitchfork but hands his companion a basket of fabric. Jane Good-stitch hand quilts in a rocking chair while a curious chimp leans in for a closer look, and Sewjourner Truth sits calmly at her work beneath the word Truth. A crowned beauty gazes out from a cameo frame, a woman in a smart dress pins blocks up on a design wall, and two playful faces are pieced entirely out of triangles and pastel shapes, looking exactly as unimpressed as their name suggests.
Cabin three: the snack table regulars
Every retreat has a cabin that is suspiciously close to the kitchen. Here the Quilteontologist trio holds court: one explains what happens at quilt retreats (you already know), one came for the quilting and stayed for the snacks, and one stayed for the chocolate. Quilt-Aholic stirs a martini with a rotary cutter, Quilts Before Dudes states the house policy plainly, and a camel wanders through wearing a patchwork blanket over his saddle, for reasons nobody has asked about.
Room for one more in her cabin
Then there is the friend who packs her own ironing station, knows which outlet trips the breaker and hands out chocolate at midnight like a camp counselor. She belongs to one of these cabins, and you can probably guess which before you finish reading the list. Give her the icon that fits and let her wear it on day one. Quiet hours start at ten, according to the sign in the lodge, and as every retreat regular can tell you, nobody has ever seen them enforced.
