Overheard in the Quilt Show Lunch Line: My Hometown Is the Best One

Stand in any lunch line at any big quilt show and you will hear it within five minutes. Somebody asks where you are from, and suddenly everyone is bragging about home: the view, the music, the barbecue, the traffic they secretly love. Stitchin' In Your City is the Chic Quilter collection that lets a quilter wear her bragging rights, with each city drawn in a bright, stitched-together scene and its name written underneath in pretty script.

The ones who brag about the music

Kansas City gets two turns at the microphone. One version builds a jazz skyline around a golden saxophone, a barbecue grill and a glowing sign, and the other adds a trumpet and a splashing fountain to the party. Denver sets its skyline in front of the mountains with musical notes floating overhead and a frosty mug on the side. Bloomington tucks a red brick tower among green trees while notes drift above the rooftops, and Cleveland lines up its angular lakefront buildings with a guitar and a basketball in the mix.

The ones who brag about going places

Some hometowns are all about motion. Indianapolis wraps its skyline in a sweeping red race track, and Charlotte loops a highway into a figure eight below the towers. Houston launches a rocket beside the skyscrapers while an astronaut floats above and a cowboy rides along the bottom. Albuquerque fills the sky with hot air balloons over purple mountains and a Route 66 sign, and Las Vegas answers with its famous welcome sign, palm trees and a big red wheel. Juneau sails in by sea, with a glacier, snowy peaks and seabirds over the harbor.

The ones who brag about the view

Then there are the quilters who simply want you to see the place. Dover pairs a striped lighthouse with a capitol dome above rippling blue and white waves, and Madison sets its own dome by a lake with a market spread out front. Galena lines up a row of colorful brick storefronts against green hills, Hartford sends its river under a stone bridge past a grand red building, and Little Rock arches a bridge over the water with the city beyond. Milwaukee spreads its winged lakefront landmark over a row of motorcycles, Los Angeles glows in pink towers and palm trees with a film reel overhead, Atlanta rises around a tall red tower and a crowd of leafy trees, and Birmingham sets a table of food right in front of its skyline. North Carolina fills its whole state outline with mountains, fields and flowering trees.

So, where is she from?

Everyone has that friend who manages to mention her hometown in every conversation, even the one about binding. Find her city here and hand it to her. She will wear it proudly, and by the time the lunch line reaches the sandwiches, she will have talked three strangers into a shop hop there next spring.
