Boss's Day in a Room Where Nobody Takes Orders

Hi there. Boss's Day is coming up, and we have a small confession from the sewing room: nobody in here has a boss. Not one of us. We looked. There is a chair, a machine, a stack of fabric that keeps growing on its own, and a dog, and not a single person who gets to say what happens next. Sound familiar?

The Org Chart, Such As It Is

Every quilter we know runs a small, fiercely independent operation. You pick the pattern. You pick the fabric, and then you pick different fabric, and then you go back to the first fabric. You set the deadline, you move the deadline, you forgive yourself for the deadline. There are no performance reviews in this room, unless you count the moment you hold a finished block up to the window and squint at it.

The only rule anyone follows is the quarter-inch seam, and even that one has a loose interpretation after 9pm.

The Boss Has Four Legs

If the sewing room does have a boss, it is the one asleep under the table. Dogs of the quilting room keep remarkably consistent hours. They arrive when the machine starts, they settle on whatever you were about to cut, and they leave the second the iron is unplugged. They do not take notes, but they do take the warm spot.

Cats, when present, run a parallel organization with a stricter dress code and no visible loyalty to anyone.

Penny would like it on record that she has never once been consulted about the schedule, and she is fine with that, and she is not fine with that.

What the Boss Actually Wants

Here is the thing about being your own boss in a room full of thread: the goals are small and the stakes are only ever yours. A finished binding. A stash that fits in the cupboard, or at least in the room. One UFO moved from the pile to the bed. Nobody hands out a plaque for any of it. You just get to look at the thing you made and know you made it.

That is the whole job description, and most of us would not trade it for a corner office with a window, unless the window had better light for color matching.

Meetings Are Held on the Cutting Mat

So if Boss's Day comes around and you find yourself with no one to hand a card to, hand it to yourself. You run the place. You hire the fabric, you fire the pattern that was never going to work, you hold the meetings on the cutting mat with coffee going cold beside you. The dog is the only direct report, and the dog is happy.

And if you want to make it official, our best sellers are where the people who run their own quilting rooms tend to find their uniform. Nobody will make you wear it. Nobody in here makes anybody do anything.

Happy Boss's Day, boss. Rooting for your quilting haul.
