Every proper society deserves a gossip column, and ours has been buzzing. The Resting Stitch Face Society is our collection for quilters who wear that famous look, the calm, unreadable expression of a woman counting stitches in her head, and this season its members have been spotted everywhere from mountain cabins to the far side of the galaxy. Pour a cup of something warm. Here is who was seen, and where.
Spotted at the retreat
The Retreat Crew arrived in style this season. One design shows a sewing machine glowing in soft watercolor purples under arched lettering, and another tucks a machine inside a little A-frame cabin, pine trees on either side and stars overhead. Quilts & Caffeine was seen close by, a striped mug with a heart curling up from the steam, which surprised absolutely no one. Sources say the crew stayed up past midnight and denied everything at breakfast.
Sighted far from home
Our Stitchin In Beauty members travel, and they leave a little motto behind wherever they sew. The Wrangell-St. Elias Dall sheep is stitching where wilderness expands, and the Pinnacles falcon is stitching along rocky spires. The Channel Islands fox has gone stitching beyond the mainland, the Sequoia bear is stitching beneath the tallest trees, and the Carlsbad Caverns bat, naturally, is stitching below the surface. The bison of Wind Cave and Theodore Roosevelt prefer the prairie, and the Black Canyon bighorn goes stitching into the depths. Further out, the SewJourner charts her route by compass rose along a winding road, and the Galaxy Stitcher was last seen spinning her machine through a swirl of violet stars.
Overheard after dark
Not every member keeps sunny hours. Nightmare Stitches shows a skeleton in a garden hat still working at her machine while a very alarmed owl hoots its objections, proof that a true quilter never really stops. The Sewciopath In Progress penguin stands in a burst of notions looking thoroughly pleased with herself, and Quilting is My Cardio spins a spiral of spools that would count as exercise if anyone asked. No one has asked.
For the quilter with the straightest face in the room
She is the one who can hear a question, finish her seam, and only then look up. She travels with a project, she has a favorite retreat cabin, and she has definitely sewn past midnight at least once this week. You know exactly who she is, and so does everyone at her guild. Membership in the society requires nothing more than that look and a love of the craft. The column goes to press whenever the bobbin runs out.
