Every class has a yearbook, and every quilt guild quietly hands out superlatives, even if nobody says them out loud. Birds of a Bobbin is the Quilt Hair Don't Care flock, nominated, voted on and honored, and mostly gathered on flasks, with Pip Patchlet, Lady Plumeadora and Noodle Beakman bringing a few other favorites along. Here is how the voting went.
Honors at the cutting table
Straightest cuts: Snipsy Wren, standing on her green cutting mat with a rotary cutter and scissors, rainbow curls piled high and not one sliver of fabric wasted. Best show-and-tell: Ruckus Jay, holding up a star block under a crest of rainbow spikes. Most finished blocks: Peaches Plume, pink and beaming, with a bright pieced square tucked under her wing. Most enthusiastic: Ziggy Bobbin, wings flung wide beside a little sewing machine as if every seam deserves applause.
Honors for the social hour
Best hostess: Velma Nightwing, violet and fluffy under a dark plume, who keeps a glass of red wine beside her sewing machine for anyone who drops by. Loudest laugh: Chaos Finch, shrieking with joy from the top of a pile of quilt blocks, rainbow feathers flared. Most easily amazed: Frizzle Mae, a round blue bird with a green crest, beak wide open at the sight of her own scrap pile.
Special recognition
Most organized stash: Puffin Bea, serene under a cloud of thread-colored curls beside a neat stack of fat quarters. Best dressed: Lady Plumeadora, the peacock, tail fanned beside a heap of green fabric. Most relaxed: Curlene Spoolworth, eyes half closed, spools of thread swaying beneath her branch. Proudest display: Pip Patchlet, who drapes her pink and green patchwork over a branch for everyone to admire. Tallest fabric stack: Noodle Beakman, all long neck and red mop, with a leaning tower of folded fabric right beside him.
