Chic Quilter has a mascot, and she takes the job very seriously. Penny the Quilting Penguin is the collection built around her: round black glasses, a very determined little beak, and a hairdo made of patchwork scraps that stopped behaving years ago. Her motto rides along on most of the art, Quilt Hair Don't Care , and she lives it with total commitment.
Penny means business
Penny's Got a Plan (Don't Interrupt) finds her in a purple sweater, flippers folded, giving a design wall of quilt blocks a long and serious side-eye. Penny the Seam Ripper Warrior raises her seam ripper like a sword, ready to settle the score with one wonky seam. In Penny's Flying Geese Chase she leaps mid-stride with scissors in one flipper and a freshly cut flying geese block in the other, and Queen of the Fabric Stack rules from the top of a castle built entirely from folded fabric, rotary cutter held high like a scepter.
Penny and the stash
Her relationship with fabric is, let's say, devoted. Penny's Fabric Obsession sits buried in open pattern books and scraps beneath a hand-stitched sign that spells out the motto. Penny's Fabric Haul peeks over a stack of folded fabric taller than she is. Send Help (and Batting) holds up a lettered plea from between rolls of batting, and Fabric First, Everything Else Later wears a wild halo of threads and ribbon ends while hugging a mug that says Fabric First. For the dressy days, Penny's Patchwork Runway struts in heels and a swirling patchwork skirt, a bow in her hair and the motto printed right across her glasses.
Penny off the clock
Even a warrior needs a break. Penny's Cozy Quilt Cocoon wraps her in a patchwork quilt with a warm mug, Quilting on Vacation laughs in a camp chair with a glass of red and a quilt in her lap, and Penny's Wine and Whipstitch Night lounges in a pink quilted robe with a sleeping puppy at her feet. Penny's Pressing Engagement dozes right on the ironing board while the iron keeps steaming, and Penny's Midnight Quilting Hour stitches on under a full moon, spools scattered everywhere. One guest drops by as well: Sewciopath In Progress is a different penguin altogether, wings flung wide in a burst of thread, spools and pincushions.
Who keeps Penny company
This one is for quilters whose hair looks like hers by Tuesday afternoon, for anyone who has argued with a design wall and lost, and for the friend in The Stitch Circle whose stash has its own zip code. Penny approves of all of you. As she likes to put it: "The seam ripper is a tool. I am a lifestyle."
