Somewhere between the savanna and the sea, the animals have taken up quilting, and all of them agreed on the same three colors. Warm-weather sewists
Desert Star Block sits a lion at his sewing machine under a pale desert sun, a cactus behind him and a patchwork quilt spilling off the table. Resting While Stitching finds a lioness stretched out at sunset beneath an acacia tree, hand quilting in her lap with no hurry at all. Strips Running Long bends a giraffe over her machine while long ribbons of fabric trail to the floor, and Geometry Like Saddle sends a camel strolling along with a pieced blanket folded across his back.
Down by the water
Eight Arms Curating places an octopus in a coral reef beneath a clothesline of hanging quilts, and All Blocks Simultaneously seats her at the sewing machine inside a wreath of leaves and bubbles, every arm busy with a different block. Perched On Progress is a sea lion sitting on a stack of folded quilts, needle in hand, and Ruler Within Reach sets a seal at her machine in a swirl of ocean current. Floating While Stitching lets an otter drift along on a quilt like a raft, a little pile of fabric resting on her belly. Beak Full Bolts sends a pelican gliding with a rolled bolt in its beak and wings made of fabric, and One More Bolt finds a seabird at the sewing table, draped in yardage and clearly not finished shopping.
Woods and meadow
Advancing The Panel stands a stag behind a wooden quilting frame, rolling his quilt forward a row at a time, and Stag At Frame shows him stepping back to admire a checkerboard of patchwork squares. Measure Then Measure is a bear at the cutting table with blocks laid out in tidy rows, taking no chances on a single cut. Mane And Thread gives a horse a flowing coral and teal mane while she sews a quilt that pools around her like water, and Draped And Certain pieces an entire mountain lion out of patchwork, loops of thread circling her like a breeze.
For the quilter who chooses color first
Stitched in Coral, Teal and Indigo is for the quilter who pulls a palette from her stash before she ever picks a pattern, and who would trust a bear with her rotary cutter as long as he measured twice. Choose the creature who sews the way you do. The octopus, for the record, is still piecing all of her blocks at once.
